A New Year and a new experience in the Turks and Caicos Islands

I have travelled through much of the Caribbean at various times over the last 30 years for my work but this was my first visit to the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Islands, a British Overseas Territory, consist of the larger Caicos Islands and smaller Turks Islands, two groups of tropical islands located roughy 650 miles to the southeast of Miami with a population of just over 31,000 of which around 24,000 live on Providenciales.

It was an early start from our house in Virginia on a foggy Sunday morning for my flight from Dulles to Charlotte in North Carolina where I changed flights for the finial leg into Providenciales. I arrived on the island in time to get to the hotel and check-in before heading to the beach for an hour before sunset to make the first of the photographs below.

The following morning I set off back to the airport for the short flight over to Grand Turk, the Capital of the Turks & Caicos Islands. I stayed at the Osprey Hotel on the north side of the Island which is a great location for the sunset below. Grand Turk is only 8 miles long by a couple of miles wide at most so nowhere is very far away! This is one of the least developed of the Caribbean Islands, although the cruise ships are regular visitors to the dock at Margaritaville at the western tip of the island. The following photographs were made over the next 3 days.

I flew back to Providenciales for the day before heading back to the airport for the return leg to Washington via Charlotte where a 2 hour delay awaited me :(
