Looking East along the River Nile

As foreshadowed in my previous months blog this month is about my recent trip to Egypt. I flew over Cairo a few times in the mid to late 80’s but this was my first visit on the ground. I arrived on the British Airways flight from London which arrives in Cairo at the unsociable time of half past midnight. By the time I had met with my driver, got through airport security, arrived at the hotel and made it to my room it was 0300! Cairo is two hours ahead of the UK and as I didn’t need to be in the office first thing in the morning I had some time to readjust.

I was staying at the Kempinski Nile Hotel which enjoys a panoramic view of the Nile from the balcony of my room where the above photograph was made. I was in Cairo for four days and most mornings were hazy with pollution and so the visibility was not great. This seemed to lift by midday and the evenings were a little clearer.

Cairo has a population of 23 million and it certainly feels like it. There is a constant sound of car horns which is synonymous with much of the Middle East and the mosque across the road from the hotel added to the authentic charm!!!

Most of the photographs here were taken from the balcony of my hotel room - see description under each photograph, with a couple of aerial views from the return leg. Most of these were shot on the Sony A6500 with the 16-70 F4 Zeiss lens, with the aerial shots made on the iPhone 6S+.

I am planning to return to Cairo in April and hopefully I will be able to get out more with the camera. Next month I will be in New Delhi so watch this space.
