Abras crossing the Dubai Creek

I left home around 5:00 pm on Sunday evening and headed to London Heathrow Terminal 5. The weather was mixed and sun low which might have been an issue if we’d been able to go above 50 mph on the M25! It usually takes about an hour to get to Heathrow from our home in Sussex, but this trip took a little longer.

This was a nostalgic trip for me as my first job overseas took us to Dubai where we lived from 1985-1989. We arrived with one child, our daughter who was 15 months old and left with another, our son Tom who was 3 when we left in April 1989. I hadn’t been back to Dubai since leaving although I have transited through the airport a few times over the years since.

I arrived in Dubai off the overnight BA flight from London, dropped my bag at the hotel and headed into the office. I only had two nights in Dubai before moving on to Abu Dhabi for a couple of nights and then it was back to Dubai by taxi for my return flight to London on the Friday.

Dubai was well established and appeared fairly developed when we were there but absolutely nothing like it is today. Dubai is also much greener and I have to say some of the architecture is stunning, although I’m not a fan of the faux “tourist trap” wind tower development that has gone up recently on the Dubai side of the Creek near the British Embassy.
