Alfriston High Street
This month we went “out out” to quote the comedian Micky Flanagan. With Covid restrictions easing we booked a night away at Deans Place on the southern edge of the village of Alfriston. We had passed through the village over a year ago on our way back from a picnic at Birling Gap on the Sussex coast and had wanted to return to explore the village more closely.
The picturesque village of Alfriston is situated in the valley of the River Cuckmere with the river running past the east side of the village. The centre piece of the village is St. Andrew’s Church which dates back to the 14th century. The Alfriston Clergy House with its thatched roof and timber framed walls is located adjacent to the Church and was the first property purchased by the National Trust in 1896. The Church over looks the village green, known locally as the Tye, which lies between the church and the properties that face the High Street that runs through the village.
This small village, population c850 boasts three pubs and serval tea rooms and is well worth a visit if you find yourself in the area.
